Wilmington News Journal Series Spotlights DuPont Bio-Based Materials

DuPont™ Sorona®A three-part series in this week's Wilmington News Journal highlights DuPont's path from chemistry to biology and current biotechnology-based initiatives, including DuPont™ Sorona®. Sorona® polymers have a unique combination of characteristics that help create softer fibers with superior comfort-stretch and recovery. The last article in the series is in today's edition.

A joint venture between DuPont and Tate & Lyle PLC has been formed to produce 1,3-propanediol (PDO), the key building block for Sorona®, using a proprietary fermentation and purification process based on corn sugar. This bio-based method uses less energy, reduces emissions and employs renewable resources instead of traditional petrochemical processes.

Sunday's article said: "Imagine a future when everything from running shoes to rocket ships is made from corn. As the price of oil soars to new highs, companies are desperate to find a replacement. And the DuPont Co. – which uses oil and natural gas as the key ingredients in Teflon® coatings, Kevlar® bullet[resistant] fabric and other products – doesn't want to be left behind. That's why its scientists are tailoring bacteria to transform plants into the chemicals used in these products."

"So far, they've produced a new synthetic fabric, called Sorona®, which is softer, stretchier and more stain-resistant than nylon. As DuPont and other companies use the science of biotechnology to find better, cheaper ways to manufacture products, they also may revolutionize the economy, experts say."

The article noted that DuPont Chairman and CEO Chad Holliday says, "'The next nylon' is Sorona®. [Chad] contends the fabric will produce several hundred million dollars in revenue within a few years. It also will use 40 percent less oil than nylon, which could save millions in costs."

"DuPont hopes that new biotech-based chemicals – the foundation of new plastics, paints, electronics, cosmetics and other products – will generate billions in sales over the next decade," the article said.
