Bonding Techniques for the Future

"Bonding technology for the vehicles of tomorrow" was the motto of the 7th conference on adhesive systems in the manufacturing industry (FSK, "Fertigungssystem Kleben"), which took place on September 29 and 30,

2005 in Bremen, Germany. The conference was organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Applied Materials Research together with the journal "Adhäsion Kleben & Dichten".

At the conference, a new competition was launched for upcoming adhesives specialists, aimed at motivating young people starting out in the field of adhesives technology. The competition gave them an opportunity to present themselves and their work to a high-caliber trade public. The first prize of EUR 1,500 was donated by Bayer MaterialScience AG, a leading manufacturer of polyurethane adhesive raw materials and other high-grade polymer products.

By donating the first prize, we want to make a contribution towards motivating young people in the field of adhesives technology," says Ralf Gehring, head of Marketing and Business Development Adhesives & Sealants in the Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants (CAS) Business Unit of Bayer MaterialScience.

From the wide selection of submitted topics, the independent jury of industry experts started by choosing the eight most interesting entries, which the candidates then presented to the auditorium. From these, the jury selected the winners according to the presentation of the technical aspects of bonding, the relevance for the bonding system and the structure of the submitted specimen.

The first prize went to Dipl.-Ing. Marc Siebert from a team headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Schlimmer at the Institute for Materials Engineering, University of Kassel, for his work on the bonding of circular connection systems. The award was presented to him during the course of the congress at the "Bremischer Abend" by Dr. Horst Stepanski, an adhesives expert with Bayer MaterialScience's CAS Business Unit.

The solution presented by Marc Siebert represents a major improvement to the conventional procedure for the production of banisters and railings using circular connectors. It combines traditional longitudinal jointing with adhesive injection to create an innovative jointing method that guarantees the reliable, reproducible production of adhesive coats and also performs exceptionally well in practice. With the aid of the mobile application unit (also patented), the advantages of the process can also be utilized on a building site. In addition, the system can be used in applications in the machine and vehicle-manufacturing industry.
