Alcan Invests US$10.5 Million to Increase Heat Treated Plate Capacity at Sierre Facility

Alcan has announced that it will invest US$10.5 million in its Aerospace, Transportation and Industry (ATI) business at its Aluminium Valais facility in Sierre to significantly increase the site’s Heat Treated Plate Capacity for industrial applications. The improved capacity is scheduled to come on stream at the end of 2007.

"This investment is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the Valais region, where a recognized know-how on Heat Treated Plate for industrial applications has positioned Alcan as a worldwide leader in this attractive segment," said Michel Jacques, President and Chief Executive Officer, Alcan Engineered Products. "This market is developing well and is expected to grow in the coming years," he added.

The investment will enhance the plant’s capability to produce a whole range of precision plates for tooling and special machinery applications, requiring outstanding surface quality and superior technical characteristics.

"A new advanced technology heat treatment furnace will be installed to produce the next generations of tooling plates, for which the main requirements are high strength combined with excellent shape stability," highlighted Michel Jacques.

This expansion will enable Alcan to meet the growing demand of the industrial plates’ market and will allow Sierre to secure its long-term market position, contributing to its customers’ success and to the future of the Company’s activities in the Valais region.
