Sri Lankan Rubber Production Hit by Floods

Sri Lanka’s rubber production has been hard hit by flooding. They have received the worst rains for 50 years, which have also killed hundreds of people and affected rice and tea crops.

Traders expect to see rubber volumes sold at auctions decrease by about 50 per cent over the next few weeks as a result of the flooding which has uprooted rubber trees.

Sri Lanka produces about 90 million kilograms of rubber annually, of which most is used domestically. Raw rubber exports earn Sri Lanka about $25 million per year.
