Characterization of Heavy Oil Fly Ash Generated from a Power Plant

The physical and chemical properties of heavy oil fly ash generated from a power plant were investigated. This study has found, heavy oil fly ash has the potential to be reutilized as a black pigment or admixture for secondary cementious material.

Preparation and Properties of Low-cost á-Sialon Ceramics Synthesized from Slag

The SHS technique has greater potential for producing cheap sialon materials. The á-sialon powder synthesized from slag displays properties suitable for the preparation of ceramics. The as-sintered slag á-sialon shows good mechanical properties & excellent anti-erosion/wear properties.

Surface Modification of -TiAl Alloys by Nitrogen Plasma Deposition

Two ã-TiAl alloys, Ti-47 at%Al-2 at%Nb-2 at%Cr(MJ12) and Ti-47 at%Al-2 at%Nb- 2 at%Mn+0.8 at%TiB2 (MJ47), have been modified in a nitrogen-ion plasma. Wear Mechanisms of PVD Coated HSS Endmills Used to Machine 1045 Hardened Steel

In general, PVD-TiN coated High Speed Steel endmills used to machine carbon steels can perform better at high cutting speeds compared with uncoated tools resulting in better surface finish and longer tool life. This coating and tool wear were investigated and their effects on machining.

Self-crack-healing is proposed as a new method for improvement in reliability of structural ceramics. Mullite/SiC particle/SiC whisker multi-composites were developed for improvement in fracture toughness as well as endowing with excellent self-crack-healing ability.

Effects of Pore Morphology on the Fabrication and Mechanical Properties of Porous Si3N4 Ceramics

Porous Si3N4 ceramics with different pore morphologies have been fabricated, utilizing organic whiskers and starch as the fugitive agents. The effect of the various pore types on mechanical properties, specifically flexural strength was invesigated. Permeability was also assessed.

Application of Crystal Chemistry in the Development of Radioactive Wasteforms

The role of crystal chemistry in developing ceramic materials for high level radioactive waste immobilisation is reviewed. Synroc, a ceramic material utilising 4 titanate phases was produced that was able to incorporate nearly all elements present in high level radioactive waste.

Aqueous Suspension Process of Multi-Dimensional Alumina/Nickel Nanocomposites

Multi-dimensional Al2O3/Ni nanocomposites with preserved multifunctional magnetic properties are successfully fabricated by an aqueous monomer suspension casting and coating processes. An optimal chemistry was found producing a composite with density 99.27% and bend strength 586MPa.

Formation of Metastable Phases of the Ni-Al System by Mechanical Milling

The mechanical alloying of pre-alloyed intermetallic Al-Ni compounds was performed and bulk samples were fabricated from the mechanically alloyed powders. The alloying and its effects on phase transformations were evaluated. Properties such as hardness, porosity and density are reported.
