Water in, water out: such is the cycle of porous material. In some cases, like with soils, it is preferable to keep water in. In others, it makes better economic and ecological sense to have porous materials dry faster, e.g. in the paper industries or with plasterboard manufacturing.

Floating Water Bridge Produces Electrically Charged Water

A team of researchers from TU Graz partnered with the Wetsus research centre in The Netherlands to create electrically charged water using a floating water bridge. The “water bridge” phenomenon was first discovered in the 19th century, but it was forgotten until it's scientific rediscovery in 2007 at TU Graz.

New Insights into Cancellous Bone Could Help Design Novel Materials

Researchers at Cornell University have discovered that bone does something better than most man-made materials: it bounces back after it breaks. In an article published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Cornell scientists report that cancellous bone – the spongy foam-like type of bone found near joints and in the vertebrae that is involved in most osteoporosis-related fractures – displays unique material properties that allow it to recover shape after it breaks.
