UChicago Scientists Discover Naturally Occurring Curium in Meteorites

UChicago scientists have discovered evidence in a meteorite that a rare element, curium, was present during the formation of the solar system. The finding ends a 35-year-old debate on its possible presence in the early solar system, and plays a crucial role in reassessing models of stellar evolution and synthesis of elements in stars. Details of the discovery appear in the March 4 edition of Science Advances.

Researchers Study Silicon Wafer Breakage Using Direct and X-ray Diffraction imaging Techniques

When single crystals, especially silicon wafers, are fractured or broken up they pose a number of serious issues. The tip of the crack spreads at an atomic scale, resulting in chemical bonds breaking, the formation of crack fronts via the micrometer-scale crystal, and a culmination of severe wafer shattering on the macroscopic scale.

Scientists Harness Static Electricity to Control Chemical Reactions

For the first time, static electricity has been harnessed by researchers to control chemical reactions. This breakthrough achievement could pave the way for cheaper nanotechnology and cleaner industry. The researchers applied an electric field as a catalyst for the Diels-Alder reaction, a common reaction, and were able optimize its reaction rate by a factor of five.

Tim Freeman was presented with the Richard S. Ladd Standards Development Award in San Antonio, Texas, on the 11th January by the ASTM D18 Committee on Soil and Rock. The award is in recognition of the time and extensive effort in developing the ASTM Standard Designation D7891 “Standard Test Method for Shear Testing of Powders using the Freeman Technology FT4 Powder Rheometer Shear Cell”.

Chemists Find New Way to Synthesize Kryptonite Crystals

A method to synthesize the first binary compound of oxygen and krypton - a krypton oxide, has been formulated by a team of theoretical chemists at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It has been discovered that this unusual substance can be produced even in the existing laboratories using very high pressure.

Stainless steel contains components that protect it from rough environments encountered in the defense and aerospace industries. These components need paths that allow electricity to power and interact with them. The paths require a genuine insulation seal to prevent them from contacting the metal case, which can limit the communication and power lines.
