European company granted US patent for nanodiamond-containing polymers

European company Carbodeon has been granted a US patent for its technology which enables detonation-synthesised diamond particles (nanodiamonds) to be combined with polymers for use in fields such as personal electronics, LED lighting, automotive and machine tools.

IEDM 2015: imec Demonstrates Integration of High Mobility InGaAs for 3D Vertical NAND Memory Devices

At this week’s IEEE IEDM conference, nano-electronics research center imec showed for the first time the integration of high mobility InGaAs as a channel material for 3D vertical NAND memory devices formed in the plug (holes) with the diameter down to 45nm. The new channel material improves transconductance (gm) and read current which is crucial to enable further VNAND cost reduction by adding additional layers in 3D vertical architecture.

Flexible Water-Based Band-Aid with Embedded Electronics Faciltates Smart Drug Delivery

A futuristic band-aid has been developed that is sticky and stretchable whilst allowing electronics to be integrated into it. The band-aid consists of a hydrogel and can have LEDs and temperature sensors embedded into its structure. Microscale drug reservoirs and delivery channels can also be integrated into the band-aid which will allow the delivery of drugs in response to changes in body temperature or other biological signals such as blood glucose levels.

Surface Treatment through Laser Shock Processing Improves Wear Resistance of Metals

Scientists at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) have proved the efficacy of using laser shock processing (LSP) technique for surface treatment in improving the corrosion, wear and crack propagation resistance of metals. This technique was found to be particularly useful for extending their useful life of aluminum alloys, stainless steels, and titanium. The ability of the laser shock processing technique in incorporating favorable surface properties increases the scope for potential applications in material processing in the nuclear, automotive, aeronautics, and biomedical industry.
