Stony Brook Researchers Determine Structure of Levitated Molten Uranium Dioxide

Scientists at Stony Brook University have successfully made structure measurements of uranium dioxide (UO2) in molten form. Till now, molecular dynamics and physical property measurement models have existed for molten UO2, but as they had been parameterized from their properties in the solid-state, significant differences were observed in their melt structures. As the structure was not certain, the molten UO2 models showed varying characterizations of physical properties which are critical for the safety of a nuclear reactor.

Digital Image Correlation Enables Accurate Residual Stress Measurement in 3D Printed Parts

Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have developed a novel accurate method for measuring residual stress in 3-D printed metal parts. Powder-bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) is a type of 3D printing process that uses a high-energy laser beam for fusing metal powder particles. In this method the metal parts are produced using a layer-by-layer method.
