NCKU Receives Fund of NT$9 Million from China Steel to Establish New Laboratory

As National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) celebrates its 79th Anniversary on November 11th, NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering has received a fund of NT$9,000,000 from China Steel Corporation (CSC), Taiwan, to establish China Steel Metal Laboratory to assist the sustainable development of the future teaching and cutting-edge research and also assistance from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to establish a Semiconductor Memorial Hall which is inaugurated on the 11th.

Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer J. C. Tsou of China Steel Corporation has personally presented the laboratory model and NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai has also presented a certificate in return in the donating ceremony held in the Conference Room of the Library, Cheng-Kung Campus, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan.

NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai pointed out, “In the last 40 years, the graduates of NCKU Department of Materials Science have provided many outstanding talents to various industries, especially to China Steel Corporation during the periods of its early establishment and later development. For instance, former President Y. C. Chen of China Steel Corporation is an alumnus of NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering and also an outstanding alumnus of NCKU. In addition, many colleagues from CSC have frequently visited NCKU to share their experience with teachers and students at NCKU.”

CSC Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer J. C. Tsou said, “In the early period, National Cheng Kung University is the main source of mining technologies and talents. Because of the solid cooperation foundations between CSC and NCKU in the past, we have brought about a closer partnership today. With the development of China Steel Corporation, the future cooperation with NCKU will not be limited to the cooperation with NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering. It will include Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering as well as other departments. I hope from now on, China Steel Corporation can make more contributions to NCKU and NCKU teachers and students and also assist the development of CSC.”

The establishment of the China Steel Metal Laboratory, supported by the fund of NT$9,000,000, aims to provide a new environment of metal teaching for the teachers and students at NCKU Department of Materials Science and to allow the complementation of theories and experiments, hoping to create a new model of industry-academic cooperation and further promote various cooperation opportunities at all levels.

Director Jiunn-Der Liao of NCKU Department of Materials Science and Engineering revealed, “For the past few decades, China Steel Corporation and NCKU Department of Materials Science have maintained a very intimate relationship. CSC has funded the research projects of the professors and supported the scholarships and research papers of students. Few years ago, to strength mutual interaction, CSC has donated lecture room and provided metallurgy courses to students in the department. Today, in light of the changes of new wave technology, China Steel Corporation has generously donated China Steel Metal Laboratory to the Department of Materials Science to promote the training of cutting-edge research talents. This is a model of industry-academic cooperation which has great significance.”

The Semiconductor Memorial Hall, donated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), is also inaugurated on this special day in the first floor of Development of Materials Science and Engineering, Cheng-Kung Campus.
