Nalco Company today introduced SMART Solutions, a grade-based offering to the pulp and paper industry to maximize operational efficiency and improve finished product performance.
With SMART Solutions, Nalco integrates the entire papermaking process through mechanical, operational and chemical means, taking into account the varying needs of producers of different grades of paper.
SMART Solutions is used in all principal steps of the papermaking process and across all grades of paper, including printing and writing, board and packaging, tissue and towel, and mechanical papers, as well as in the management of critical resources such as fiber and water.
Essentially, SMART Solutions focuses on what customers do by maximizing operational efficiency and on what customers sell by improving the performance of their finished products.
“In the past, customers looked to us for chemicals that addressed individual issues in the papermaking process,” said Mark Irwin, President, Paper Services Division at Nalco. “We are now being asked to do more than this.”
Mohawk Paper Mills, Inc., the largest manufacturer of premium printing and imaging papers in the United States, understands the value of SMART Solutions for their business.
“By collaborating with Nalco, applying its SMART Solutions offering at our mill, we were able to create a new family of proprietary surface treatments for use on the Indigo press,” said Gavin Gaynor, Director of R&D at Mohawk. “Our new i-Tone™ product line is a direct result of the on-site customization of Nalco’s integrated technologies and the combined technical expertise of Mohawk and Nalco.”
“With SMART Solutions, we promise more and we deliver more,” Irwin continued. “We deliver technologies that yield a measurable improvement in print performance, sheet structure, or new grade development, for example. And we are paid based on delivering on these and other key performance indicators, as defined by our customers’ needs. We work exclusively on our customers’ agendas and we deliver measurable value. This new business platform is the foundation of the next level of partnership with our customers.”
Nalco is the leading provider of integrated water treatment and process improvement services, chemicals and equipment programs for industrial and institutional applications. The company currently serves more than 60,000 customer locations representing a broad range of end markets. It has established a global presence with over 10,000 employees operating in 130 countries supported by a comprehensive network of manufacturing facilities, sales offices and research centers.
