Increased Capacity for Suriname Alumina Plant

Joint venture partners Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals and BHP Billiton have approved the expansion to the Paranam alumina refinery in Suriname. After completion, the capacity will be increased by 250,000 metric tonnes per year to 2.2 million metric tonnes per year.

The $65 million project is due to commence immediately and should be completed by July 2005. The expansion project is also expected to bring significant benefits to the Surname economy.

Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals own 55% of the joint venture, with BHP Billiton owning the remaining 45%. Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals is a global alliance between Alcoa (60%) and Alumina Ltd (40%).
