Solar Cell from Berkeley Lab/University of Illinois Features Highest Luminescent Concentration Factor Ever Recorded

Researchers from Berkeley Lab and the University of Illinois have successfully integrated designer quantum dot light-emitters with spectrally matched photonic mirrors to produce solar cells capable of absorbing blue photons at concentration about 30 times greater than that of traditional solar cells. This is the first time such high levels of luminescent concentration factor have been recorded.

Water Self-Heals Multiphase Polymer Derived from Genetic Code of Squid Ring Teeth

An international collaboration of researchers has discovered that a drop of water could self-heal a multiphase polymer developed based on the genetic code of squid ring teeth. This breakthrough research holds promise for extending the service life of fiber-optic cables, medical implants and other difficult to repair in place objects.

Melt Spinning Process for Effective Recycling of Permanent Magnets

Strong permanent magnets are capable of powering wind turbines and electric motors. Highly powerful magnets are made up of rare earth elements, dysprosium and neodymium. Researchers at Fraunhofer are working on a more economic and rapid method for recycling rare earth elements used in permanent magnets.

New Method to Produce Transparent, Fluorine-Free, Anti-Smudge Polyurethane Coatings

Self-cleaning windows, stain-resistant automobile interiors, graffiti-proof walls—there is a long list of things that we wish could have a surface to which dirt wouldn’t stick. In the journal Angewandte Chemie, Canadian scientists have now introduced a new method for producing transparent, smudge-resistant coatings resistant to both water- and oil-soluble contaminants. In contrast to previous approaches, this method does not use fluorinated substances, which makes the coatings both significantly less expensive and more environmentally friendly.
