New Methods for Characterizing 3D Macroporous Hydrogels for ‘Smart’ Materials

Chemists at Professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski’s lab at Carnegie Mellon University have developed novel methods for characterizing 3D macroporous hydrogels (3DOM hydrogels), which could enable development of new “smart” responsive materials. These materials could be used for various applications, including tissue engineering scaffolds, chemical detectors, carbon capture absorbents, and as catalysts.

Rare-Earth Recovery Process Enables the Creation of Magnets from Recycled Material

Scientists belonging to the Critical Materials Institute, a U.S. Department of Energy Innovation Hub managed by the Ames Laboratory, have discovered a novel way to recycle manufacturing waste to recover precious rare-earth magnetic material and utilize it to form useful magnets. One of the ways to minimize demand of rare-earth magnetic materials, which are limited mined resources, is to develop efficient waste-recovery techniques.

MRI Imaging of Plants Could Help Design New Engineering Materials

Researchers from the University of Freiburg, Germany, have developed a new method that utilizes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for visualizing the load-induced deformations that occur at the junction between a plant’s stems and its branches. This junction, called as plant ramifications, could provide new insights towards designing new lightweight, fibre-reinforced, branched materials for a wide range of applications including architecture, airplanes, cars and bicycles.

Laser-Induced Micro-Explosions Create New, Exotic Materials

A team of researchers has developed a novel technique to make new, exotic materials using ultra-short laser-induced micro-explosions in silicon. Silicon is a material that is generally used in computer chips. The research team successfully focused lasers onto silicon which was embedded deep inside a clear silicon dioxide layer and blasted small cavities in the solid silicon reliably. The study has been published in Nature Communications.
