BASF’s New Shanghai Plant to Produce High Performance Resins and Electrocoat

BASF is investing around €90 million to set up a world-scale production plant at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in Shanghai, China. The new plant will produce high performance resins and electrocoat (e-coat). The start-up of the production line is planned for the second half of 2015. The plant will help to address the increasing demand for high quality coatings solutions in growing industries, notably the automotive industry, in Asia Pacific.

Novelis Opens Expanded Aluminum Rolling Operations in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Novelis, the world leader in rolled aluminum and recycling, today announced the opening of its expanded aluminum rolling operations in Pindamonhangaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Quantitative Kinematic Analysis of Light-Induced Jumping Crystals

When irradiated with UV light, micrometer- to millimeter-sized crystals of the cobalt coordination complex [Co(NH 3)5(NO2)]Cl(NO3) cover distances over thousands of times larger than themselves. Why do they do this? The nitrite ligand (NO2) is normally bound to the central cobalt ion through its nitrogen atom. This bond is broken by the irradiation and the ligand rotates a little to use one of its oxygenatoms to bind to the cobalt instead. This isomerization produces strain in the crystal. The strain is dissipated through movement and fracturing. The crystals jump and may even explode.
