Invention Could Allow More Efficient Production and High Performance of Superconductors and Microelectronics

Two scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory have developed a method to control the buildup of hydrogen fluoride gas during the growth of precision crystals needed for applications such as superconductors, optical devices, and microelectronics. The invention - by Vyacheslav Solovyov and Harold Wiesmann and recently awarded U.S. Patent number 7,622,426 - could lead to more efficient production and improved performance of these materials.

Europe is Recycling 70 Per Cent of Its Steel Packaging

The latest figures from APEAL (the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging) show that 70% of steel packaging is recycled in Europe. This represents over 2.5 million tonnes of food and drinks cans and other steel containers being recycled in 2008, saving 3.9 million tonnes of CO2. According to the latest available data, this places recycling rates for steel above those of other packaging materials such as plastic, beverage cartons and glass (29% , 33% and 62% respectively).

New Sheet Metal Tester from Zwick Designed to Deal with Higher Strength Materials

The new BUP200 sheet metal testing machine was developed in response to new materials with higher strength properties and associated ductility behavior, together with increasing demands on component quality. The machine now provides punching and clamping forces up to 250 kN and, with its new and fresh design, the BUP200 completes the successful portfolio of sheet metal testing machines up to 1000 kN.

Researchers Use Freemen Powder Tester to Improve Inhaled Pharmaceuticals

Pharmaceutical science researchers at Monash University in Australia, are using the FT4 universal powder tester from Freeman Technology to investigate novel techniques for improving the flow properties of excipients for inhaled product formulation. The team, led by Dr David Morton, has recently published work describing the use of optimised dry coating techniques to enhance the flow of fine lactose particles.
