In modern society, perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) hard disc drives (HDDs) are a ubiquitous technology. They have extensively been used as the ideal choice for economical and stable long-term data storage.
Duplex 2205 is a two-phase, austenitic (γ) and ferritic (α) stainless steel alloyed with 5 to 6% Ni, 3% Mo and 22% Cr. It is characterized by general corrosion in harsh environments, excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and good fatigue strength.
It has been found that the mechanical properties of small volumes significantly differ from those of bulk volumes for a wide variety of materials. Several methods are available for increasing the strength in bulk materials, including work hardening and decreasing the grain size (Hall-Petch).
Bond coatings are deposited as intermediate layers on superalloy structures in order to improve several critical performance criteria, including hot corrosion resistance, limiting atomic migration of the base metal and adhesion of a thermal barrier coating.
Molecular structures known as perovskites have been hailed as a wonder material which could revolutionize the solar cell industry because they are cheap and easy to produce.
