UPV/EHU BIOMAT Group Develops Biodegradable Container for Oily Products

The BIOMAT group at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) has developed an active, biodegradable container for packaging of solid and liquid oily products. This container is made from agro-industrial by-products. It is transparent and can prevent gases like oxygen and ultraviolet light from entering the container. This container can be printed upon and can also be thermally sealed.

Toyota and Brookhaven Lab to Explore Chemical Reactions of Mg Batteries

Toyota is collaborating with the Brookhaven National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy to explore the molecular structure and monitor chemical reactions in rechargeable magnesium batteries. Mg batteries are considered as an ideal candidate for replacing the existing Li ion batteries due to the abundance of Mg and its greater storage capacity. Lithium ion batteries have a lot of limitations in cost, durability and energy density and are not ideal for large-scale uses such as in electric or hybrid vehicles.

University of Southampton researchers have reportedly found strong evidence that antimicrobial copper can help the spread of Ebola. The intrinsic hygiene benefits that materials such as copper provide could enhance the effectiveness of existing protocols such as disinfectants and quarantine procedures, which by themselves are proving insufficient in curbing the spread of the deadly virus.

Royal DSM Combines Thermoplastics Technologies for Lightweight Automobile Natural Gas Tanks

Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, says a combination of two of its most innovative thermoplastics technologies has resulted in high performance pressure vessels that are ideally suited for use as lightweight fuel tanks for automobiles running on compressed natural gas (CNG) or hydrogen.
