New Supramolecular Copolymers Driven by Self-Sorting of Molecules

Chiba University. Researchers in Japan have succeeded in creating a new type of helicoidal supramolecular polymer. The process and mechanism of the generation of its structure were observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM); the helicoidal structure grew spontaneously after two different monomers were mixed. The findings of the study, which was published in Nature Communications on April 1st, 2020 may lead to the design of original soft materials.

An All-Organic Proton Battery Energized for Sustainable Energy Storage

Uppsala University. Sustainable energy storage is in great demand. Researchers at Uppsala University have therefore developed an all-organic proton battery that can be charged in a matter of seconds. The battery can be charged and discharged over 500 times without any significant loss of capacity. Their work has been published in the scientific journal Angewandte Chemie.

A New Way to Fine-Tune Exotic Materials: Thin, Stretch and Clamp

DOE/SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Turning a brittle oxide into a flexible membrane and stretching it on a tiny apparatus flipped it from a conducting to an insulating state and changed its magnetic properties. The technique can be used to study and design a broad range of materials for use in things like sensors and detectors.

Graphene-Based Actuator Swarm Enables Programmable Deformation

Graphene-based actuators featuring fast and reversible deformation under various external stimuli are promising for soft robotics and MEMS. However, these bimorph actuators are incapable of complex and programmable 3D deformation, which limits their practical application. Inspired from the collective coupling and coordination of living cells, researchers from Jilin University and Tsinghua University proposed a moisture-responsive graphene actuator swarm that has programmable shape-changing capability by patterning the SU-8 inert layer underneath.
