Computational and Experimental Methods Together Predict Crystal Structure Better

Understanding the arrangement of atoms in a solid — one of solids' fundamental properties — is vital to advanced materials research. For decades, two camps of researchers have been working to develop methods to understand these so-called crystal structures. "Solution" methods, championed by experimental researchers, draw on data from diffraction experiments, while "prediction" methods of computational materials scientists bypass experimental data altogether.

Dow Announces Completion of 30 KTA Liquid Epoxy Resin Expansion at Stade Site

Dow Epoxy, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, completed its 30 KTA Liquid Epoxy Resin (LER) expansion at its fully back-integrated Stade, Germany site. The facility, which has now been ramped up to full production rates, will increase the Company’s global LER capacity by 10 percent. This will improve the reliability of Dow’s supply chain and epoxy assets, allowing Dow to better serve its customers and to continue to grow with the marketplace.

IEDM 2012: imec Addresses Key Challenges of Scaling beyond Silicon-Channel finFETs

At this week’s IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM 2012), imec addressed key challenges of scaling beyond silicon-channel finFETs. Imec showed that channel mobility can be boosted by growing non-Si channels on a strain relaxed buffer (SRB), and demonstrated excellent scalability potential of the technology. Moreover, imec revealed insight on the unique influence oxide trapping has on the gate stack mobility in High-Mobility Ge and III-V channels.

Thermoplastic Composite Structures Mass-Produced Using Injection Molding Process

To date, it has been very laborious to manufacture fiber-reinforced composites with a thermoplastic matrix in large quantities. On the one hand, the textile-like dense continuous fiber-reinforced structures are difficult to shape, on the other, joining the continuous fibers with a highly viscous thermoplastic matrix material is a highly complex process. To date, there is no economically profitable production technology for large-volume component series.
