A rheometer is a laboratory instrument used to measure the way in which a liquid responds to applied forces. While viscosity is a measurement usually applicable in determining the resistance of a fluid, a rheometer is used to measure fluids that cannot be defined by a single viscosity value. The two types of rheometers include rotational, or shear, rheometers, and extensional rheometers. Shear rheometers utilize a controlled instrument, such as a pipe or rotational cylinder, to induce stress, whereas extensional rheometers monitor the applied stress of hydrogen onto the liquid.
