Recommended Surface Roughness for Metallic Seals

Since metal sealing solutions utilize plastic deformations of the outermost layer, softer materials are typically preferred, such as aluminum or silver. With plating, we recommend a surface roughness of 16–63 RMS to allow the material to adequately deform.

Similarly, if a jacketed material is used, we suggest a surface roughness of 32–125 RMS. The rougher surface finish is desired since there is more material to deform in a jacketed layer than a plated one. We understand some may require a harder material, such as nickel or stainless steel, for higher temperature requirements or chemical compatibility. In this case, we recommend a surface roughness of 16–32 RMS for plated or 32–63 for jacketed seals.
