Principle of PI’s Magnetic Linear Motors

This video is an animation of the principle behind PI’s magnetic linear motors. The magnetic linear motors correspond to a sequence of a number of voice-coil actuators; individual coils can be regulated according to a position-dependent, defined pattern (commutation). In general, movement of the coils or the magnetic assembly is possible.

PI’s Linear motors are used both for very low and very high for feed velocities. They function precisely in a range below 0.1 µm/second to more than 5 m/second. If integrated with air or magnetic bearings, a position resolution down to a few nanometers is achievable.
