How Standard Method GC Systems from SCION Can Work for the Oil & Gas Market

DHA, SIMDIST, and RGA are just a few of the basic, pre-configured systems that SCION offers to satisfy a broad range of applications. Edinburgh Instruments’ extensive expertise in developing, configuring, and producing complete systems with all their analytical advantages ensures that users will find the right answer to any analytical problem they face.

SCION provides the Standard Method GC System to fulfill users’ needs, whether for hydrocarbon processing, refinery product control, or natural gas monitoring, all based on over 35 years of expertise and satisfied users. Each Standard Method GC System can be calibrated and tested to the specified analytical techniques, as well as perform additional calculations such as boiling points (simulated distillation), and so on.

Simulated Distillation Analysis (SIMDIST)

The 8300GC and 8500 GC SIMDIST systems are turnkey solutions based on industry-standard procedures. They offer a real boiling point distribution for a hydrocarbon sample.

These Standard Method GC Systems will be factory tested and managed by the sophisticated CompassCDS Workstation software package, which includes preprogrammed settings.

The SIMDIST Standard Method GC Systems can be set up according to the following methods:

  • D7096
  • D2887
  • Fast/Accelerated D2887
  • D7213 (D2887 Ext) & DIN 51435
  • D6352, D7169, IP480, IP507, IP545

Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA)

The DHA Standard Method GC System is intended to characterize the total hydrocarbon sample composition by separating individual components in a single analysis. This system quantitatively determines all target hydrocarbon groups (n-paraffins, i-paraffins, olefins, naphthenes, polynaphthenes, aromatics, and, for certain techniques, oxygenates), as well as the carbon number distribution for each group.

DHA Standard Method GC Systems can be configured according to the following methods:

  • D6729
  • Fast DHA
  • D6730
  • D6733
  • D5134
  • DHA FE acc D7900, IP344, D7169

Fast DHA to D86

The DHA to D86 system predicts True Boiling Point (TBP) curves for light hydrocarbon streams (D86 groups 1 and 2) with a final boiling point below 250 °C. The technology combines ultrafast DHA with Fugacity Film modeling software to deliver TBP data in less than six minutes of run time and 15 minutes of cycle time.

This Standard Method GC System will be properly calibrated, tested, and documented prior to distribution.

Natural Gas Analysis

Natural Gas Analysis A is used to determine the levels of O2, N2, CH4, CO2, and C2 and C3 hydrocarbons.

Natural Gas Analysis B - A molecular sieve column for determining O2 and N2, with no oven coolant, and a short/long DC 200/500 for hydrocarbons and CO2.

Natural Gas Analysis B with H2/He Channel - Injects simultaneously into two columns: a molecular sieve column for O2 and N2 determinations without oven coolant, and a short/long DC 200/500 column for hydrocarbons and CO2.

Natural Gas Analysis C – Used for the determination of O2, N2, CH4, CO2, and H2S.

Natural Gas Analysis C with H2/He Channel – Used for the determination of O2, N2, CH4, CO2, and H2S.

Refinery Gas Analysis (RGA)

SCION provides two types of RGA Standard Method GC Systems to enable the most diverse range of analyses.

Standard RGA

A three-channel 8500 GC system with a multi-valve design that uses both capillary and packed columns to provide very robust and reliable analysis even at higher gas volumes. This Standard Method GC System can handle all sorts of refinery gases, including stack gases, flame gases, and reformer gases.

Rapid RGA

A three-channel 8500GC system with a multi-valve design in which the Standard RGA's packed columns are replaced by micropacked columns in both the hydrogen and permanent gas channels, resulting in quicker analysis or increased throughput. It is a standard, complete system for analyzing refinery gas in 5 minutes.

The 8500 GC Rapid RGA system separates saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon isomers from C1 to C5, as well as composite C6+ and permanent gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulphide.

Permanent Gases, CO/CO2 and Light Hydrocarbons

Permanent Gases Analysis

This Standard Method GC System can analyze all gases up to propane in a variety of matrices, including refinery gas, natural gas, reformer gas, burner gas, and exhaust gas. This Standard Method GC System separates oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide, and the C2 isomers ethane, ethylene, and acetylene from diverse matrices utilizing highly sophisticated columns.

Light Hydrocarbon Analysis

This Standard Method GC System is appropriate for the measurement of hydrocarbon contaminants in gaseous samples such as chemical or technical grade ethylene, propylene, and butylene. The system is also compatible with all sorts of refinery gases, including stack gases, flame gases, and reformer gases.

Transformer Gas Analysis (TOGA)

There are three options available:

  • TOGA Based on D3612-A (Gas Extraction): This system is configured to conform to the ASTM D-3612 procedure
  • TOGA D3612-B (Stripper Column): This system is configured to conform to the ASTM D-3612 procedure B, using Stripper Column.
  • TOGA D3612-C (Headspace): This system is set to adhere to the ASTM D-3612 method C, using Headspace (the HS sampler requires purchase separately)

Dual Channel Standard Method GC System

The dual-channel Standard Method GC System combines two single-channel standard systems into a single 8500-GC configuration. The individual channels' specifications are the same as those listed in the Data Sheets for the (Single) Standard Method GC System.

The dual systems are simple to use and completely automated. The factory tunes and sets operational settings, including gas flows. The whole chromatographic process is preserved. Electronic Flow Control has been introduced.

Several dual-channel Standard Method GC systems are available.

  • Light Hydrocarbon / Hydrogen Analysis
  • Light Hydrocarbon / Permanent Gas Analysis
  • Permanent Gas / CO / CO2 Analysis
  • Permanent Gas / Hydrogen Analysis
  • CO / CO2 / Hydrogen Analysis
  • Dual Channel Light Hydrocarbon Analysis
  • Dual Channel Low-Level Oxygenates Analysis
  • Light Hydrocarbon / CO / CO2 Analysis

ASTM D2162 Analysis

ASTM D2163 is the standard test technique for determining hydrocarbons in LPG and propane/propene mixtures. Each 8300 GC has an S/SL Injector, a FID Detector, and a Liquid or Gas Sampling Valve.
