The Pharma 24 Twin-Screw Extruder for Advanced Continuous Drug Manufacturing

The Thermo Scientific Pharma 24 Twin-Screw Extruder, available with HME and Twin-Screw Granulation (TSG) Application Sets, is designed for continuous processing in pharmaceutical research, development, and production.

The Pharma 24 extruder supports a reduced cleanroom footprint, consistent and controlled processing, shorter product changeover times, on-demand manufacturing, minimized scale-up risk, and dependable cleaning. It is compatible with process analytical technology (PAT).

The Pharma 24 Twin-Screw Extruder features:

  • Removable screws and liners
  • Compact footprint to minimize cleanroom space requirements
  • Continuous operation that uses fewer utilities compared to traditional batch processes
  • High free volume screw design
  • Low process inventory
  • Reduced ingredient usage, minimizing material handling and operator exposure
  • Segmented screws and barrel

PAT Compatibility:

PAT can be implemented to monitor specific stages of the process, such as mixing uniformity or moisture levels, to ensure the required product quality. The Pharma 24 Extruder is compatible with various PAT instruments, including the Thermo Scientific FT-NIR System.

Options:

A complete range of GMP-compliant ancillary equipment is available to align with the extruder’s performance. This downstream equipment can be integrated into the extruder control system.

For TSG Configurations:

The available ancillaries contain volumetric or gravimetric dosing affluents and liquid injection pumps.

The self-contained units of either configuration can be operated with recirculating chillers to reduce water consumption.

TSG configuration recommended for:

  • Dry/melt granulation
  • Wet granulation

For HME Configurations:

Available ancillary equipment includes volumetric or gravimetric dosing feeders, air-cooled conveyors for product cooling, strand and face-cut pelletizers for pellet production, and chill roll or flaker units for rapid cooling and flake formation.

HME configuration recommended for:

  • Biomedical products
  • Modified release
  • Solubility enhancement
  • Drug delivery systems
  • Co-extrusion
