ASTM D5771 describes how an automated equipment utilizing an optical device can determine the cloud point of petroleum products and biodiesel fuels that are transparent in layers 40 mm thick. With a temperature precision of 0.1 °C, this test technique covers the temperature range of –60 °C to +49 °C.
The specimen is gradually cooled in accordance with the cooling profile given in Table 1 of the procedure following the insertion of the designated test jar containing the specimen into the apparatus and the start of the program. A reflecting optical system continually checks the specimen for the development of a crystalline structure.
When the optical system detects wax crystallization in the material, the temperature is recorded with a precision of 0.1 °C. The specimen is subsequently heated to ease the initiation of the following test.
