This instrument determines the temperature below which solid hydrocarbon crystals may form in aviation turbine fuels and aviation gasoline. The freezing point represents the lowest temperature at which the fuel remains free of solid crystals, which could otherwise restrict flow through fuel system filters.
In flight, fuel temperature typically decreases depending on aircraft speed, altitude, and flight duration. To ensure safe operation, the fuel’s freezing point must always be lower than the aircraft’s minimum operational fuel temperature.

The freezing point detection system delivers fully automated sample testing with high accuracy and repeatability, conforming to ASTM D1177 specifications.
During testing, the sample is continuously stirred and cooled in the test chamber. A dynamic optical measurement system emits a light pulse every 0.5 °C via a coaxial fiber optic cable positioned above the sample. The light pulse is reflected off a mirror back to an optical sensor, where advanced software analyzes the response to detect the onset of crystallization through light scattering.
The sample is then gradually warmed, and the temperature at which the hydrocarbon crystals fully disappear is recorded as the freezing point. The system accurately measures all clear and transparent fuels, regardless of color.
Integrated Panel PC and Software Package
The KLA Series analyzers are standalone systems equipped with a built-in panel PC and an advanced software suite. The 12 in. TFT/LCD touchscreen display (1024x768 resolution, 16.2 million colors) provides real-time graphing and display of all analytical parameters.
Test data is saved in Microsoft® Excel-compatible formats. The software actively monitors the operation of all analyzer components, including solenoid valves, the cooling system, pressure sensors, and the PT100 Class A Platinum resistance temperature probe.
Cooling System
Designed for a wide range of user applications, the system supports testing at temperatures as low as -95 °C. Its direct cooling mechanism features integrated, CFC-free gas motor compressors, eliminating the need for solvent-based cooling baths. This direct system rapidly cools the bath to approximately -80 °C within 15 minutes and uses less energy than conventional systems. Combined with a consistent cooling profile, it ensures repeatable results and high test reproducibility.
