Orton Ceramic Foundation offers RSV-1600 and RSV-1700 high-temperature rotational viscometers for measuring viscosities of molten materials at different temperatures, following ASTM C965-A criteria. They could also be used for testing according to ASTM C1276 and ISO 7884-2 standards.

The Orton Rotating Spindle Viscometer (RSV) measures viscosities at certain temperatures using the constant angular velocity approach and creates a curve representing a molten material's viscoelastic behavior.
Measurements in both inert and reactive atmospheres are possible with Orton RSV devices. The latter is used with air/oxygen-sensitive materials, including slags, coal ash, and metals, while the former is most common in the glass sector. This capacity enables the simulation of an actual application's environment.
- Viscosity data at high temperatures up to 1700 °C (3092 °F)
- Air or inert and reactive atmosphere measurements
- Glass, coal ash, slags, metals, and other materials are tested
- Remote PC software for data collection and analysis, as well as multi-step programmable thermal cycles
- The instrument’s small footprint
- Orton has been using high-temperature furnaces and viscometers for more than 20 years

Rotating Spindle Viscometer (RSV) (ASTM C965, C1276, ISO 7884-2)

- Orton designed the device to accommodate a platinum crucible and spindle
- A vertical fixed-position tube furnace heats the sample crucible while it is supported by a motorized lift pedestal
- The sample thermocouple at the crucible's base monitors the sample as it is kept at a preset soak temperature until thermal equilibrium is achieved
- The viscometer turns the spindle at a predefined rotational speed after it is manually lowered into a molten sample
- The results are automatically recorded as a function of rotational velocity and sample temperature
- This procedure is performed at a variety of rotational speeds and soak temperatures
- Data is collated, and viscosities are determined in accordance with ASTM C965 Procedure A
